Embracing my Nerdy

I feel like for a long while I have been ignoring my inner nerd, and he feels neglected. I decided that I didn’t like that and missed doing many of the things I did before. So, I recently started playing Role-playing games feeding the beast and making me want to play even more and develop my own stories. By role-playing I mean I’m playing Dungeons and Dragons online at Roll20.net. It is the greatest website ever created by man and must have been divinely inspired for creation. It had been several years since I had the opportunity to play, it was when fourth edition had come out.

Jumping back in hasn’t been that easy, especially online because playing with new people isn’t easy. You must learn their quirks what drives them as a player and judge the DM. Sometimes there are rule mongers, and that can be annoying a distracting from the game. Then you have no shows which can be bothersome when you are really wanting to get your nerd on.

I play on Friday evening and Sunday evening in two prefabbed WotC games. Friday, I play Lost Mine of Phandelver and on Sunday it’s the Hoard of the Dragon Queen. Friday’s game has some fun people who I’m enjoying playing with especially the Gnome played by Aaron. He’s a silly little dude who does some ridiculous things, like chopping off a bugbear’s head and trying to wear it on top of his own head. He is collecting some fun trophies and it’s only been in the first little dungeon we haven’t even really been far to explore much. I play a Cleric of Helm and I’m following the Life path for a cleric because life is important. I really do like getting back into it with a fun group that is trying to enjoy themselves. Agatha is going to be our next target and I’m excited to get after her in our next part.

Sunday’s game is a unique experience, because there are more people playing and even though they are mostly good characters they play far more violently. I played a Monk that will be great once I get a few levels. I spend 90% of the time knocked out because at level 1 your character is so damn weak you wonder what the hell you are doing adventuring in the first place. We have one player character that is incidentally a member of the cult that is the main antagonist for the story so far. We are in a town that is being raided by a cult for Tiamat, and the cultist are everywhere and the Sorcerer in our group just so happens to be a member of the cult and I don’t think he even understands the cult. The session on Sunday saw me go from being knocked out from the end of our last session to me being knocked out about five minutes into our next fight. Though this happened right after I did something pretty damn heroic.

Because this wasn’t enough, I signed up for a Wednesday game last week and I think that might be a fun game at least I’m hoping. I’ll be playing a High Elf Barbarian that has the greatest back story, well in my opinion. Tarsh is an uncommon High Elf because he’s a barbarian. He became a barbarian because he wasn’t raised by high elves for his whole life. He was adopted and raised out in the wilds with a tribe of barbarians. Barsh the chief of the tribe decided to take him as a son and officially making him a member of the tribe. They took him in because he was the only survivor of a raid of Orcs that killed his entire tribe but him. They gave him the name Tarsh to sound like sort of Orcish so it will be remembered how he became a part of the tribe. They raised him this ways for much of his youth before a group of High Elves out on a mission noticed young Tarsh traveling with the barbarian tribe. The High Elves confront the Human barbarians to ascertain how they have an elf with them. Barsh explains the situation and the Elves have a discussion and reveal that Tarsh is a member of the community and they couldn’t believe that one had survived the slaughter that happened so long ago. They explain that his name is Dwelinealtriel and that he is a noble born of their city. Barsh then asks Tarsh if he would like to go to the High Elf city to learn of his people and Tarsh decides that he would love to go and learn from them as well. So, he takes to the road with the elves to learn of his homeland and about his family history and how he will play a part in the future. After several decades in the high elf city learning the mysteries of the High Elf society, Tarsh decides it was time to return to his people in the wilds and leaves after explaining that he missed the home he had known. When he returns to the wilds, he finds that his tribe has moved on and now he searches for them. This search has brought him to be aligned with the new party, the dragons have a part in his missing tribe.

I feel happy about that background, and what’s even better is I’m drawing that idea from several sources. I like the idea of a high elf was because of another character in a different game, where a cleric is high elf, and she is running around casting chill touch everywhere and I thought damn that’s cool. So, I chose high elf because I liked that, then I chose barbarian because I was thinking which race besides a Halfling would be the next crazy barb. Bam High Elf.

Ok, that is enough of the talking about D&D, though I love it and want to play more. Though I really want to branch out and try other games that sound interesting like the Burning Wheel. That is all for now, thanks for reading, enjoy your day and do something you enjoy bringing more happiness to the world. If you aren’t happy then play a Role-playing game, that will make someone happy.
